South Africa - First Year Missionaries
Radical
discipleship for college students wanting to follow Jesus' model
Come join
a small group of college-age students in South Africa!
Our First Year Missionary program is for single adults ages 18-24. The FYM program has three components during the year, The Awakening, Outreach, and Leadership.
The Awakening
The Awakening takes place in South Africa from September through December and focuses on teaching, training, and discipleship. Besides daily teaching and training in the mornings and ministry in the local communities in the afternoons, you will experience personal discipleship and community living. Our staff will disciple you and regularly evaluate your progress. As you build relationships in the local townships, you will have opportunities as well to disciple those God brings your way. Living together with about 50 other FYM participants will challenge you to learn how to live with and love those around you. You will learn much about yourself and become more like Christ in so many ways.
Outreach
During the second component of the FYM year, outreach at your ministry location, your ministry team of 10-12 will live and serve together in the local community. Here are some of the elements of the Outreach:
- These teams will be established during the first week of The Awakening. You will hear about several ministries and their locations for the outreach.
- Possible locations include Swaziland, South Africa, Botswana, and Mozambique.
- After you submit your top three choices for your outreach location, you will be divided into teams to minister together during the Awakening and into the Outreach.
- Outreach ministries and internships might include ministry in the townships, in hospitals, at day care centers, orphan ministry at care points, etc.
- You will continue to be discipled by one of our staff as they challenge you to understand and personally surrender to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Leadership
Our final leadership component is optional. During the summer, Adventures In Missions sends hundreds of high school and college students all over the world on Ambassador (one-month) and Real Life (two-month) trips. We need leaders who know their locations to help lead these teams. If you apply and are accepted, you would then go through additional leadership training, help lead a trip, and finish in the beginning of August.
Discipleship is the main emphasis of our First Year Missionary program. We don’t want to simply send you out and give you an experience. We want to invest in you and help you to become a disciple maker, following Christ’s commission to us. We want you to discover the vision God has for you as you become a radically committed disciple of Jesus Christ.
