First Year Missionary Family
Radical discipleship for college students wanting to follow Jesus' model

FYM Family
The First Year Missionaries live together in community and consider themselves a family. Words couldn’t really begin to express what that means to each person, but the closeness of family is undeniable.

Koinonea is the supernatural partnership, commitment, communion and fellowship between believers. Most American Christians have never experienced it. In such an individualistic society, in such a cleaned-up, dressed-up, once-a-week church, we never really let the walls down, let others see us for who we are and see them the same. It’s a shame. Try avoiding real brotherly love, though, when you’re in this group!

Your family will be comprised of a family leader (a single individual or husband and wife team), support staff, an RA for each of the men’s and women’s houses, and about 12 other FYM brothers and sisters in Christ. Not only is there real sharing, priceless intimacy, love and learning from each other that comes from a healthy family, but there’s also a lot of fun!

Andrea describes the FYM Family like this: “We are a family not just in name, but in our very confession of faith. The FYM Family loves, serves, sacrifices, prays for, and encourages one another.”

Jessica says, “I have never had friends that would just drop everything and pour straight into me without thinking about themselves. If that doesn’t say how amazing these people are and how much they mean to me, I don’t know what would.”

It isn’t perfect, and the FYMs don’t always live in perfect peace and harmony. In fact, they get on each others’ nerves at times. However, love always reigns victorious and covers the issues that try to get in the way. And there’s stuff to be learned in that, too. In fact, James says, “the overwhelming love we have for each other just blows away the differences between us.”

The FYM Family means different specific things to each person, but overall it means love. True, sacrificial, Christ-like… the love He has called each of us to have for one another.
