Pray, Moses, Pray

One of the things I love to do at the carepoint is help to cook. The cooks are all volunteers and work so hard. They love the support and have taught me a couple SiSwati words so they can tell me what

Hope
3/8/2008
This week, the desperation and tragedy of this place started to hit me.
Realizing that some of my first graders are HIV positive.
Meeting gogos in the hospital that have out-lived 6 of their 9 children.
Holding the tiniest baby boy and knowing his mother is dying and each breath is painful for him.

I have good news about the church here in Matamoros. Castillo del Rey may be continuing on, in a different location than where they are right now, hopefully nearby or within a pesera (bus) ride

Three precious kids
2/29/2008
|
Three precious kids have completely captured my heart the past week of so. Nokwanda (7), Nomvuyo (4), and Setu (2) are three of the 8-15 children that come to our carepoint in the morning for lessons. These kids immediately caught my eye the first day I saw them. Their solemn mannerisms and lack of emotion stood out from most of the others.

Esther
2/21/2008

She is a mother of 45 (5 of her own and her 40 students), a strong and loyal wife, a joyful and caring teacher, a prayer warrior, and a friend to me. Her name is Esther. You could also call her Gogo, Teacha, or Mrs. Sihlongonyane; I stay away from the last option- it's way too hard to say! When I met Esther...

Sometimes I want to be like Jesus because I think he had all his stuff together. I think my generation (and probably in every generation before) suffers from this deep desire and temptation to arrive and to have it all together. We long for the fast track, to be finished and complete - to fill our heads and find the answers - and to miss out on the struggle and the suffering.

More than just a Mission trip it's Learning to Listen and Obey.

Today I experienced one of the most life-changing situations I have ever encountered. My group was doing the activity "prayer walking." I have never done this before or anything like it, so I was very skeptical at first. Once we started praying I had a calming feeling fall over me. I realized that it was not me speaking, but God.

Adventures in Swaziland
2/1/2008
|
The sun is hot, the mangos are ripe, and the mosquitoes are hungry - it's summertime in Swaziland. As I begin my days, I adorn myself with flip flops, sunscreen, and a long skirt… an adventure always awaits. In this week alone I have ridden a children's school bus, explored a Swazi jam factory, visited an orphanage, met the regional education officer and the Bishop of Manzini, been caught in an African rain storm, tasted berries that somehow suck all the saliva out of your mouth, rescued myself and my roommates from unidentifiable creatures in our room...
